Large-Scale Pattern Discovery in Music

چکیده
Large-Scale Pattern Discovery in Music Thierry Bertin-Mahieux This work focuses on extracting patterns in musical data from very large collections. The problem is split in two parts. First, we build such a large collection, the Million Song Dataset, to provide researchers access to commercial-size datasets. Second, we use this collection to study cover song recognition which involves finding harmonic patterns from audio features. Regarding the Million Song Dataset, we detail how we built the original collection from an online API, and how we encouraged other organizations to participate in the project. The result is the largest research dataset with heterogeneous sources of data available to music technology researchers. We demonstrate some of its potential and discuss the impact it already has on the field. On cover song recognition, we must revisit the existing literature since there are no publicly available results on a dataset of more than a few thousand entries. We present two solutions to tackle the problem, one using a hashing method, and one using a higher-level feature computed from the chromagram (dubbed the 2DFTM). We further investigate the 2DFTM since it has potential to be a relevant representation for any task involving audio harmonic content. Finally, we discuss the future of the dataset and the hope of seeing more work making use of the different sources of data that are linked in the Million Song Dataset. Regarding cover songs, we explain how this might be a first step towards defining a harmonic manifold of music, a space where harmonic similarities between songs would be more apparent.

Juggle: large-scale discovery in music recommendation
Today’s offer of audio content exceeds the human capability of manually searching datasets with hundreds of songs, demanding automated tools capable of handling music recommendation when faced with large-scale collections. In this work, we address the playlist generation and song discovery tasks with large-scale datasets. It is possible to quickly obtain playlists and explore collections with e...
متن کاملRepresentation and Discovery of Vertical Patterns in Music
The automated discovery of recurrent patterns in music is a fundamental task in computational music analysis. This paper describes a new method for discovering patterns in the vertical and horizontal dimensions of polyphonic music. A formal representation of music objects is used to structure the musical surface, and several ideas for viewing pieces as successions of vertical structures are exa...
متن کاملMelodic Pattern Extraction in Large Collections of Music Recordings Using Time Series Mining Techniques
We demonstrate a data-driven unsupervised approach for the discovery of melodic patterns in large collections of Indian art music recordings. The approach first works on single recordings and subsequently searches in the entire music collection. Melodic similarity is based on dynamic time warping. The task being computationally intensive, lower bounding and early abandoning techniques are appli...
متن کاملCharacterizing Listener Engagement with Popular Songs Using Large-Scale Music Discovery Data
Music discovery in everyday situations has been facilitated in recent years by audio content recognition services such as Shazam. The widespread use of such services has produced a wealth of user data, specifying where and when a global audience takes action to learn more about music playing around them. Here, we analyze a large collection of Shazam queries of popular songs to study the relatio...

In traditional architecture, the adherence of architects to the rules and proportions in numbers, geometry and music is present in designing and shaping many public monuments, and mathematical proportions, artistic ratios, or musical proportions are used in geometry of these buildings. Extracting and matching mathematical rules and proportions and examining them in the architecture of the tradi...
